
AAU basketball tryouts are around the corner, and we want to make sure you’re fully prepared to showcase your skills and stand out on the court. Tryouts are a crucial step in making the team, and preparation is key. Tryouts are meant to be challenging so try and stay positive, embrace feedback, and show that you are a team player willing to work hard and have fun. There may be tough competition, but staying composed and giving your best effort will put you in a strong position. Here’s the itinerary for tomorrows tryouts, and a few pointers on how you can get ready to perform your best.

Understanding the Commitment
AAU basketball is a competitive environment requiring dedication. if you make the team, you must be ready for 5-6 months of training, 1.5-2 hour practices 3 times a week, a spring league with 9+ games, 6 weekend tournaments from spring through fall, and summer travel for travel teams. Make sure you understand the schedule and are prepared to balance school, family, and basketball responsibilities.
Fuel Your Body Properly
Proper nutrition the night before fuels top performance. Prioritize these:
Protein (chicken, fish, eggs, beans) for muscle recovery
Carbs (brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, fruits) for sustained energy
Hydration (water, electrolyte drinks) to prevent cramps and fatigue
Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil) for overall endurance
Bring The Right Gear
Ensure you have:
Indoor basketball shoes
Proper Ankle/braises for ankles, or knees.
A water bottle - there will be water fountains and bathrooms on site.
Stretch Before & After Tryouts
Stretching is critical to prevent injuries and maintain flexibility.
Before Tryouts: Dynamic stretches like lunges, arm swings, and leg swings to activate muscles.
After Tryouts: Static stretches such as hamstring stretches, quad holds, and deep breathing exercises to aid recovery.
During Tryouts, Build Chemistry with Other Players
AAU basketball is about team success. We are going to be with each other for up to 6 months, learn to connect with potential teammates during tryouts to build chemistry and understand different playing styles.
What Coaches Look For in Players
Hustle for loose balls
Push the ball up the court quickly
Limit unnecessary dribbles
Attack when a lane is open
