AAU basketball is a competitive environment requiring dedication. if you make the team, you must be ready for 5-6 months of training, 1.5-2 hour practices 3 times a week, a spring league with 9+ games, 6 weekend tournaments from spring through fall, and summer travel for travel teams. Make sure you understand the schedule and are prepared to balance school, family, and basketball responsibilities.

Fuel Your Body Properly

Proper nutrition the night before fuels top performance. Prioritize these:

  • Protein (chicken, fish, eggs, beans) for muscle recovery

  • Carbs (brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, fruits) for sustained energy

  • Hydration (water, electrolyte drinks) to prevent cramps and fatigue

  • Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, olive oil) for overall endurance

Bring The Right Gear

Ensure you have:

  • Indoor basketball shoes

  • Proper Ankle/braises for ankles, or knees.

  • A water bottle - there will be water fountains and bathrooms on site.

Stretch Before & After Tryouts

Stretching is critical to prevent injuries and maintain flexibility.

  • Before Tryouts: Dynamic stretches like lunges, arm swings, and leg swings to activate muscles.

  • After Tryouts: Static stretches such as hamstring stretches, quad holds, and deep breathing exercises to aid recovery.

During Tryouts, Build Chemistry with Other Players

AAU basketball is about team success. We are going to be with each other for up to 6 months, learn to connect with potential teammates during tryouts to build chemistry and understand different playing styles.

What Coaches Look For in Players

  • Hustle for loose balls

  • Push the ball up the court quickly

  • Limit unnecessary dribbles

  • Attack when a lane is open

  • Shoot the ball when you're open

  • Box out and crash the boards

  • Communicate on both defense and offense

  • Fill the lanes correctly in transition

Communicate with Coaches

If you have any questions about tryouts, expectations, or areas to improve, don’t hesitate to reach out to the coaching staff. Showing initiative demonstrates your dedication.
